Russia held Greece scoreless in the last three minutes to squeeze out a tough 66-64 victory and claim first place in U20 European Championship Group B on Saturday night.
Greece had started the final period with a 58-46 lead only to see the Russians snatching victory from the jaws of defeat by winning the final frame 20-6.
Vladislav Trushkin inspired the Russian comeback but it was Gleb Goldyrev's three-pointer with 29 seconds to go that allowed the eventual winners to jump ahead.
Trushkin collected 15 points and eight rebounds and was the key man for Russia down the stretch, Aleksandr Gudumak finished the game with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Artem Vikhrov chipped in with 10 points and 5 boards.
Spyridon Motsenigos had 17 points for the losing side and Giannoulis Larentzakis scored 15, but the Greeks will be very disappointed to have let the victory slip out of their hands.
Russia and Greece both advance to the Second Round, where they will face Serbia, Germany and France.
However, the Russians will start the next phase with two victories, while the Greeks will only have one in the bag.
