Russia delivered another solid performance at the U16 European Championships for Women as the reigning champions booked their spot in the next round with a hard-fought 61-52 victory over Greece.
But the combination of results on the second day in Group B also ensured that the Greeks, as well as the Czech Republic, are also guaranteed a place in the next phase, leaving winless Croatia to prepare for the relegation round.
Led by 14 points from Ekaterina Ilinova, the Russians broke open an early stalemate to lead 22-14 at the end of the first quarter and they held the Greeks scoreless for five minutes as they claimed a 32-20 half-time advantage.
Their opponents tried to recover, closing the gap to 47-43 to set up what could have been a thrilling fourth period.
However Greece missed 12 consecutive shots in a brutal five-minute spell as their hopes fizzled out, despite a game-high 19 points from Eleni Kyratzi.
