Group D: Turkey Stops Germany, Valient Italians Fall

Turkey broke open a close game early in the third quarter and beat Germany 63-53 in their opening game at the UMCORU18 European Championship.

Germany got 10 first-half points from Svenja Greunke and only trailed 32-31 at the break.

Turkey went on an 18-7 run at the start of the third quarter to take command.

Reiner Crhomik's Germans never lost hope and reduced the deficit to 50-42 early in the fourth quarter, but Turkey managed to stay in front.

Forward Durdane Gumusay led a balanced scoring attack for Turkey with 14 points.

In the other group game, Arina Lysyuk poured in a game-high 25 points to guide Ukraine to a 77-67 triumph over Italy.

The Italians started cold allowing Ukraine to storm to a 24-7 lead late in the first quarter.

The Azzurre managed to cut down the deficit to 58-55  with a hopeful second-half comeback but Ukraine stepped up on defense and held on for the win.

"I am very happy with my performance," said Lysyuk.

"At times we lost some concentration on defense but in the crucial time we didn't give Italy many options."
