Turkey Get Besok Boost

29.08.2003

Huseyin Besok has given Turkey coach Aydin Ors a lift by play in Thursday's 93-91 defeat at Serbia & Montenegro in Novi Sad to show he is fit enough to play at the European Championships.

Eurobasket 2003 tips off on September 5 in Sweden and Besok was an uncertainty after he and Mehmet Okur sat out of last weekend's defeat to Italy in the Efes Pilsen World Cup II final.

Both played against the world and European champions, however, with Besok logging eight minutes and scoring four points and grabbing three rebounds.

Detroit Piston Okur contributed nine points and had five rebounds.

Hidayet Turkoglu, Stojakovic's former Kings team-mate who has just signed for the NBA champions San Antonio Spurs, was held out of the game with a neck problem but he is expected to recover and could play when the teams take each other on again on Friday - Turkey's last preparation game.

Sacramento Kings superstar Predrag Stojakovic led all scorers with 27 points and Milan Gurovic also scored 21 for the home side in a game that was tight throughout.

Ender Arslan, who played just one qualifying game for Turkey, enhanced his chances of making the squad with a team-high 17 points and Haluk Yildirim poured in 15.

Turkey's squad will be trimmed to 12 when they return home to Istanbul, where they will continue their preparations.

Ors and company will then leave for Sweden on September 2.
