Turkey started the U20 European Championship Men with a 69-51 win over Georgia in the opener of Group B.
The team of coach Orhun Ene took an early lead, and with a 14-4 run in the third kept Georgia far behind to secure the win.
Point Guard Dogus Balbay was the main player of the day for Turkey scoring 16 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing five assists, while Georgia found bliss in the contribution of big guy George Shermadini who posted 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
Balbay scored the first four points of the game as his team took a 9-2 early lead.
Shermadini started to be a factor and moved things for Georgia, but saw Turkey kept a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Shermadini climbed to nine points, but committed his second foul and took a rest.
Balbay carried Turkey in the second quarter as well, and every time Georgia got closer, he was there to keep the margin safe as Turkey held a 31-22 lead at half time.
Both teams maintained the low tempo game, and used their defense to make the difference.
Shermadini moved Georgia within 31-27 but Turkey struck back with a 14-4 run.
From that point on Turkey maintained the double-digit lead and finished the game with an 18 point win.
Turkey will take on Israel tomorrow, while Georgia will face Italy.
