Poland Turn It Around Against Turkey
Poland allowed just seven points in the final 12 minutes to come back for a 62-59 victory over Turkey in Qualifying Round Group E at the U18 European Championship Men.
The hosts, who improved to 2-1 in the group, were paced by Mateusz Ponitka with 14 points while Michal Michalak collected 13 points, 13 rebounds and five assists. Piotr Niedzwiedzki scored 12 points and Tomasz Gielo had 10 points.
Berkay Candan and Samet Geyik each scored 11 points to lead Turkey, who dropped to 1-2 in the group.
The first quarter was a tug-of-war with three lead changes and four tied games until Turkey opened the biggest lead at 22-16. And the lead was 24-18 after one period.
The Turks opened the second quarter with an 8-3 run to push the margin to 32-21. And the Turkish advantage was still 41-31 at halftime.
Poland's defense began to improve in the third quarter but the Turks were still leading 45-37 and then 52-48 after three periods.
Turkey led 57-53 with under six minutes left but they could not solve the tough Polish defense, which allowed only one basket the rest of the way. With Poland leading 62-59 and a chance to ice the game, Michalak missed two free throws with 12.5 seconds left.
And then Berkay Candan had a good look but could not hit a potential game-tying three-pointer with 6 seconds left.
