Turkey Top Estonia
Turkey beat Estonia 84-58 in the first game in Group E today to secure themselves at least fourth place in the group behind France.
The fatigue of having played six games in seven days seemed to have caught up with the teams as the game moved at a snail’s pace at times.
Birkan Batuk was back to his best from beyond the arc after missing some key chances yesterday.
He lead Turkey with 19 points and seven rebounds, and his three treys in the first quarter helped Turkey pull away and establish a commanding 25-15 lead at the end of the first.
Estonia were by no means playing badly at this point, with Siim-Sander Vene and a number of his teammates shooting well and scoring good numbers.
But they couldn’t compete in the rebound department with Turkey’s bigger men, and gave away too many fouls to allow Turkey to maintain their distance from the free throw line.
Then any doubt as to the outcome of this game was removed in the third.
In a terrible quarter for the Estonians only three of their players found the basket resulting in a meager nine point haul while Turkey continued to shoot well all over the court, pulling away to a 24 point lead with 46 seconds left in the quarter and leaving them to cruise to the win.
