Sweden Turn Game Around In 2nd Half To Beat Belgium


Tournament hosts Sweden recorded a 70-63 come-from-behind victory over Belgium on Wednesday to secure third spot in Group E.

Trailing 43-29 early in the third quarter, the Swedes went on a 21-3 run to take a 50-46 lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Jana Raman's jumper gave Belgium a 53-52 lead but Fahriya Abdi's basket put the Swedes in front for good with 7:37 remaining.

"We had a talk in the locker room," said Abdi. "Our coach was very mad and for the first time in this tournament he yelled at us.

"We stepped up and we had to win this game.

"It was very important for us to reach the Quarter-Finals.

"Our coach said to us that we could not embarrass ourselves in front of the home fans, that we needed to win.

"The crowd helped us and we got the triumph."

Abdi finished with 18 points and corralled 17 rebounds while teammate Cleopatra Forsman-Goga poured in 14 of her game-high 26 in the second half.

She was 10 of 14 (71.4%) from the floor and also pulled down 10 rebounds.

Sweden out-rebounded Belgium 47-37.

Jana Raman led Belgium with 24 points but was the only player on her team to reach double figures.

Sweden's triumph means Latvia (2/3) have also progressed to the last eight having finished fourth in the group.
