Sweden Humble Bulgaria

16.09.2006

Sweden did exactly what they needed to do in their final EuroBasket qualifying game on Saturday to have any hope of making the final round.

Needing a win over Bulgaria to take second position in Group A behind Poland, Sweden handed out a 79-50 drubbing to the visitors.

The Swedes are now forced to wait and see if their 3-3 record and goal average will be enough to take one of the available EuroBasket spots for the two best second-placed teams.

Sweden wasted no time in taking care of business against Bulgaria and jumped out to an 11-2 lead after seven minutes.

Although team captain Todor Stoykov had already called his side's qualifying campaign a failure, Bulgiria refused to simply give up.

Stoykov's men fought back in the second quarter to cut the score to just three points at halftime, 30-33.

But things began to unravel for Bulgaria after the break.

Sweden extended the advantage to 10 points and hammered home the victory with a 27-9 fourth quarter display.

Per Ringstrom put together his best performance for Sweden in qualifying with 23 points on 9/13 shooting and 9 rebounds.

Stoykov led Bulgaria with 14 points.
