Germany Crush Sweden

Germany are one win away from a place in EuroBasket Women 2007 after inflicting a heavy defeat over Sweden in qualification on Wednesday.

Sweden were held to just three points in the third quarter on the way to a 63-37 loss.

The victory sets up Germany for a final qualifier against Croatia on Saturday in Dorsten.

A win would guarantee the group win for Germany, while a loss may still be enough to qualify depending on the result of Poland vs Sweden.

"We still have one game to play and want to qualifiy with first place in our group," explained German coach Olaf Stolz.

Germany's dominant third quarter allowed them to canter to victory in the final period.

Sweden knew they were in for a tough night after a poor first quarter saw them get just seven points on the board, and trail 15-7 after 10 minutes.

To their credit, Sweden battled back in the second quarter and a three-pointer from 18-year old point guard Frida saw the lead cut to 2 points at half-time, 23-21.

"We did a good job in the first minutes of the game, building an early lead, but after that we lost our intensity completely," said Stolz.

"I do not have any explanation for that. We finished much too fast and did not work our game plan."

But any good work Sweden had done was quickly cancelled out in an atrocious third quarter. Germany outscored Sweden 17-3 to take a 40-24 lead and easily held on in the fourth for the win.

"In the second half we played much better and controlled the game after some minutes," concluded Stolz.

Linda Froehlich continued her outstanding play for Germany with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Anne Breitreiner top scored with 19.
