Germany Score Road Win Over Sweden

09 September 2006

Germany look to be squarely back on track for EuroBasket Women after beating Sweden 68-62 in Östersund on Saturday.

The Germans top Group C with a 2-0 record.

Linda Fröhlich usually leads the German cause, but it was Anne Breitreiner who stepped up against Sweden.

The 22-year old guard scored a game high 21 points as Germany led the contest from start to finish. Fröhlich finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The Germans came roaring out of the gate in the first quarter, nailing two three-pointers to take a 6-0 lead.

Sweden came back to 22-19 at the end of the first quarter, but soon found themselves trailing by double-digits in the second.

Breitreiner had a hand in every play down the stretch as Germany built their lead. She assisted on three straight baskets in the final two and a half minutes and hit a lay-up herself as Gremany went into the halftime break 42-30 in front.

The lead ballooned to as many as 18 points in the third quarter, and although Sweden came back to within 12, they were left with a herculean effort to try to win the game in the final 10 minutes.

That effort proved simply too great for head coach Elvind Möstl's players. In spite of a strong finish, Sweden simply ran out of time and Germany closed out the game.
