U20 MEN

Lithuania registered the first victory in Group D on the opening day of the U20 European Championship in Slovenia, holding off Sweden, 80-71, despite a shaky start.

Tempers were flying high, as Kazys Maksvytis and Rolandas Jakstas were called for technical fouls early.

Lithuania in general looked nervous with Sweden showing incredible resilience and always staying within striking distance.

Dovydas Redikas led the Lithuanians in scoring with 24 points, also adding 7 steals.

Vytenis Cizauskas finished the game with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds, as Lithiuania forced Sweden to turn the ball over 20 times.

Despite being two years younger than the competition, Sweden's Marcus Eriksson had a game-high 30 points.

The 18-year-old made 6-of-10 shots from beyond the three-point arc and grabbed 5 rebounds.

On Friday, Group D action will continue in Domzale for both opponents as Lithuania have a game against Italy, while Sweden will attempt to open the victory count in their encounter with the hosts, Slovenia.
