Fernandez is now 30, a recently crowned Euroleague champion and a star instantly recognisable across the European basketball world. A sizeable portion of the Spanish public nonetheless will always see in him the young prodigy who broke the mould in 2004. Before even celebrating his 19th birthday, the winger mesmerised fans by displaying a unique package of refined skills, impressive vertical leap and abundance of swagger to lead Joventut Badalona to the Copa del Rey title and walk away with the MVP award. Fernandez went on to carve out a spot for himself on the Spanish team that competed in the Athens Games that same summer and has not stopped since, collecting a total of seven medals with Spain. When he steps out in Berlin, he will pull even with Juan Carlos Navarro and Felipe Reyes as the only Spanish internationals to have participated in six consecutive EuroBasket tournaments.
