Mondelo Includes Four American-Based Players In U20 Group

15 June 2010

Spain coach Lucas Mondelo has included four players in the American college system in his 14-strong preliminary squad for the U20 European Championship for Women.

They are Mireia Vila of Saint Joseph's, Vega Gimeno of Robert Morris, Florida State's Leonor Rodríguez and Oregon State's Amaia Gastaminza.

"Mireia and Vega have had a consistent season," Mondelo said.

"Amaia had a problem with a serious injury but she has recovered well.

"Despite the bureaucratic problems Leonor had, she is a player with a lot of quality."

Mondelo has kept the backbone of the team that finished runners-up to the United States at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Thailand last year.

That includes the team's leading scorer in the tournament, Perfumerias Avenida's Marta Xargay.

She poured in more than 15 points per game.

And the team's leading rebounder, Vanessa Ble, is also in the preliminary squad.

Ble averaged 6.8 points and 8.7 rebounds in Thailand.

"We want to give continuity to the work done by the FEB with these players and with other coaches," said Mondelo, who was recently named as the new head coach of Perfumerias Avenida.

"Of course, we have made slight changes considering the season and the development of the players."

Mondelo has also been able to follow the three players that compete at college level in the United States.

Spain will take on Italy, Serbia and Germany in Group C.

Their opener is against the Italians on July 15.

"Our aim is to compete and fight to get a medal.

"To be silver at the World Championship does not assure us of winning a medal at the European Championship.

"I am, nevertheless, optimistic because these players have developed well."

The U20 European Championship will be held in Liepaja, Latvia, with the gold and bronze medal games on July 25.

Spain preliminary squad: Cristina Ouviña (Mann Filter) and Berta Chumillas (Conquero), Leonor Rodríguez (Florida State), Marta Xargay (Perfumerías Avenida) and Elena Espiau (Mataró), Marta Tudanca (Univ. de Ferrol), Celia Menéndez (RC Canoe) and Mireia Vila (Saint Joseph's), Vega Gimeno (Robert Morris), Miriam Foraste (Sarria), Amaia Gastaminza (Oregon State), Miriam Bolivar (Olis Soller), Vanessa Ble (Palacio de Congresos Ibiza) and Laura Gil (Segle XXI).
