Spain See Off Italian Challenge

Daniel Diez's double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds paced five players in double figures as Spain remained undefeated at the U18 European Championship Men with a 73-66 victory over Italy in Qualifying Round Group F.

Spain moved to 4-0 in the group with Guillermo Hernangomez scoring 13 points, Alejandro Suarez pouring in 12 points, Jaime Fernandez hitting for 11 points and Alejandro Abrines Redondo adding 10 points and six rebounds.

Italy dropped to 1-3 despite 13 points each from Matteo Imbro and Mattia Magrini and a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds for Matteo Chillo.

Spain cruised to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter and even led 23-7 before finishing the first period with a 23-13 advantage.

The cushion was still 14 points - 32-18 with 5:40 remaining. - before the Italians put the clamps on the Spaniards scoring the final eight points to pull within 32-26 at halftime.

The Spanish still led 43-36 but Italy went on a 12-3 run for a 48-46 lead. Spain however were ahead 55-52 after three quarters.

Italy were still as close as 60-56 with 5:25 remaining. But Spain went on an 11-0 run over the next 4:46 to blow the game open, 71-56 with a minute to play.
