Spain U18 coach Luis Guil has set his side the target of reaching the semi-finals of the European Championships despite the absence of Sergio Rodriguez and Carlos Suarez.
Guil's team are on the brink of qualifying for the quarter-finals after winning their opening two matches against Latvia and Belgium but still need to beat Greece in their final group match in order to progress.
The cream of Spain's youth came to the championships in Serbia & Montenegro in confident mood having won their six previous games, even without Rodriguez and Suarez, who have stepped up to the under-20 side.
Guil realises that it was important for the team to begin the competition with a win.
"We focused on preparing well for the opening game (against Latvia) especially, as they can determine what happens after. After that we put in another good performance against Belgium," Guil told El Mundo Deportivo.
||The clear objective is to reach the semi-finals
"If we reach the next round then it is going to be hard as we will be in the same pot as Turkey and Serbia & Montenegro, the big favourites. The clear objective is to reach the semi-finals and that is what we are fighting towards," he said.
Spain have been working hard in defence with the aim of stopping the opposition scoring more than 70 points and Guil will not be pleased to see his side have conceded 82 points and 71 points in their first two games.
