10. Mairi Buchan (Scotland)
Mairi Buchan added 11 points in Scotland's opening win

Scotland, Malta, Austria and hosts F.Y.R. of Macedonia all claimed convincing victories on the opening day of the European Championship Small Countries Women in Ohrid.

The Scots romped to a 73-54 triumph over Azerbaijan in Group A with Rona Corkindale scoring 29 points and corralling nine rebounds.

John Gordon's team led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and were only on top, 25-24, with 2:35 to go in the second quarter.

Scotland then turned on the afterburners and pulled away.

They went to the changing rooms with a 31-24 advantage after Corkindale made a pair of lay-ups and a jump shot to finish the first half.

Scotland poured in the first 10 points of the second half to take command for good.

Also in Group A, Malta stormed into a 27-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 72-23 triumph over Moldova.

Ashleigh Vella and Rebecca Thoresen each had 13 points, Elena Cassar 12 and Christina Grima 10 in a balanced attack for the winners.

Austria dominated in their game against Wales, leading from start to finish.

Margit Forcher and Austria are back in European basketball after as many as 11 years

Mike Kress' team raced into a 26-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and ended up prevailing 72-30 with Katharina Podoschek's 14 points a game-high for the Austrians.

Sophia Plank poured in six of her 11 points early on as Austria led 10-2.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia put the result of their Group B game against Gibraltar beyond doubt early.

They seized a 39-3 lead by the end of the first frame and pulled away for a 83-36 victory.

Veteran power forward/center Monika Gavriloska had 15 points and 21-year-old guard Ana Tanturovska contributed 14.

Wednesday's games see Azerbaijan meet Moldova and Malta square off against Scotland in Group A, while in Group B, Wales clash with Gibraltar and F.Y.R. of Macedonia take on Austria.
