Romania And Sweden Win In Relegation Round


Romania won their fourth straight game in the relegation round of the U20 European Championship for Women with a 62-41 victory over Bulgaria while Sweden beat Germany 67-64.

Cristina Bigica had 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead Romania, who improved to 4-0 in the relegation group.

Danielle Hamilton scored 19 points and Beata Gullberg made four free throws in the final nine seconds to finish the game with 17 points for Sweden, who like Germany are 2-2 in the group.

Elisabeth Pavel added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for Romania, who took initial control of the game with a 17-5 spurt spanning the first and second quarters for a 41-24 lead.

And a 12-0 run between the third and fourth quarters gave Romania a 56-30 advantage.

Bulgaria, who were led by Tsvetromira Sharenkapova with eight points, dropped to 0-4 in the group 

Sweden opened an eight-point lead in the first quarter but there were four lead changes in the second period.

The Swedes had a 62-57 lead with 46 seconds to play but needed four foul shots by Gullberg down the stretch to grab the win.
Frida Fogdemark had seven points and 12 rebounds and Stefanie Yderstrom scored 10 points for Sweden.

Pia Mankertz paced Germany with 19 points while Sarah-Marie Frankenberger had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Stephanie Wagner scored 15 points and Svenja Brunckhorst chipped in 10 points.
