Belarus Breathe Life Into QF Prospects

It was hideously ugly at times but Belarus won't care after they gave themselves a great chance of reaching the last eight of the U20 European Championship Women with a hard fought 60-54 success against Poland in Group E.

Having barely registered on the tournament radar so far, this success was a terrific boost for Aliaksandar Shymkaviak and his team but could prove a potentially fatal blow for Poland.

The Poles allowed a great chance to book their place in the last eight of the competition to ebb away with a poor final quarter and it could haunt them with their final Second Round fixture against the imposing presence of Spain.

Both teams struggled in just about every facet of the game for the most part. And, it was Poland continually spilling the ball without any serious pressure and also their distinctly poor decision-making offensively which were significant factors.

As indeed were 38 points off the bench for Belarus including the excellent three-point shooting performance of Ksenija Voishal. She converted four triples in an 18 point haul as her team wrapped up the win with an impressive 20-10 last quarter.

Center Mariya Papova also did a particularly good job defensively with nine rebounds and three blocks.

Belarus will now play the Netherlands in their final Second Round game in what is looking like a potential winner-takes-all match-up for a place in the Quarter-Finals.
