Martyna Stelmach was given the green light after her injury against the Netherlands and went on to average 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds

One player who has most definitely experienced the highs and lows of the U20 European Championship Women is Polish centre Martyna Stelmach, and now we are adding to her list with a Half-Court Press.

After an opening day loss to Sweden, Stelmach was wheeled out of Fönix Hall on day two with a suspected ACL injury during the game with the Netherlands.

But, as everyone awaited news with baited breath, it emerged that thankfully, no real damage had been done and incredibly, she was given the green light to resume playing.

Stelmach wasted no time and 24 hours after thinking her tournament was over and with only a lengthy spell on the side-lines to look forward to, she was back on court helping her team get the win they needed against Italy to move into the Second Round. What's your first basketball memory?
Martyna Stelmach: When I was 13, I went to the first basketball practice of my life because I was tall and they called me for a workout. But it wasn't interesting for me. I never thought that I would be a basketball player.

Why did you want to become a basketball player?
I didn't want be basketball player but I changed my mind after a couple of workouts. Basketball became my meaning of life.

If you were at the Olympics but not as a basketball player, which other sport do you think it would be fun to win a gold medal in?
If I was there, then for sure it will be handball, because it was the first sport of my life.

What is your perfect vacation, relaxation in an exotic place or more activities and exploring?
I would prefer to stay at home with my family since I'm not playing in my home town and am away the whole year!

If you could only listen to one song again for the rest of your life what would it be?
Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean'.

What is your most valuable personal item/possession?
I think that is family, friends and love!

Do you have any pre-game ritual or superstition?
I always wear my head phones and listen to music.

Which Polish senior national team player do you admire most and why?
I actually admire my own team-mate Magdalena Ziętara because she is a young and very talented player.

What is your favourite moment from any youth tournament and why?
In Poland, when we won the Polish Juniors Championship. At European level, it would be
sixth place in Katowice during 2008. We played at home and it was my first Championship when I wore the Polish jersey.

If you didn't play basketball and you could do any other job - what would it be?
I would like to work in a hospital, in the oncology department. I would like to help cancer patients to get through these most difficult days in life.

What are the best three things about being from or living in Poland?
Polish food, nice people and varied landscape!

What did you think when you hurt your knee against the Netherlands?
I was just sad because I couldn't finish the game and help my friends.

Who is the most sensible of your team-mates and who is the craziest and why?
The craziest one is certainly Ramona Cossengue. Everything out of her mouth sounds funny. And the most sensible is Dorota Mistygacz since she is our captain and she always supports us!

Can you cook? If you were cooking a meal for your coach what would it be?
I would probably cook some traditional food from my part of Poland.

What was the last movie you watched at the Cinema?
Men In Black 3.

What's your best quality as a player and as a person and what is the worst?
I don't like talk about my qualities. But my close friends and my family know me best!

What are your favourite other sports and which teams do you follow?
I like handball, swimming and football. The only player I follow is Fernando Torres.

What are the most important things for a basketball player to have?
Sacrifice, bravery and intelligence.

There's only two seconds on the shot clock, do you pass or shoot?
I would pass the ball to Magdalena Ziętara because I believe in her ha, ha!
