Maciej Lampe's career is viewed by most of the Polish public as something of a reverse fairy-tale: from a beautiful swan to an ugly duckling. He was touted early to become a Polish great, joining Real Madrid at age 15, drafted by the Knicks at 18. His three years in the NBA were uneventful, to say the least. Back in Europe, his career was once again up-and-down, with a lot of "down" being caused by injuries. He played well for Poland at EuroBasket 2009 and in qualification in 2010, but on both occasions the overall results for the team were disappointing. But in the last three years Lampe, now 28, has established himself as inside force in the Euroleague and Spanish League so the expectations for him in the Polish national team are high again. Theoretically his game, which is a nice combination of inside and outside elements put into a 2.11m giant body, can be well paired with Marcin Gortat's, but they need the right coaching to achieve cohesion. The two big men from Lodz are eager to prove that together they can put Poland back on the basketball map.
