While the Netherlands shocked Spain, Poland landed a hard fought victory over Turkey. With the final score of 69-63, Poland opened their run at the U 16 European Championship Women successfully.
Beata Jaworska and Kinga Wozniak contributed 14 points each for the Polish side. Wozniak also stole the ball on five occasions. Turkey's Deniz Dogan marked a game high 17 points.
From the early going Poland managed to keep a slight advantage over Turkey. After leading 19-16 after ten minutes of play, Poland could increase the margin up to 34-28 at halftime.
Turkey managed to reduce the deficit and finally tied the game at 34-34 in the third quarter. The momentum in the game changed again as Poland went on a 12-1 run which helped them to grab a solid 50-39 lead.
Turkey rallied once again, cutting the deficit down to a single point (52-51). However, Poland answered with a 6-0 run to claim a seven point lead with 5:12 minutes to go. Despite the efforts of a resilient Turkish squad, they did not give away their lead in the final minutes and got what they wanted.
