France Halt Dutch Threat

France brought the first round of the U16 European Championship for Women to a close on Saturday night as they defeated the Netherlands 66-43 to take second place, behind Turkey, in Group D.

But Les Jeunes Bleues - led by 15 points and 10 rebounds from Mousdandy Djaldi-Tabdi - required a surge in the fourth quarter to shake off the Dutch and head into the second phase in Cagliari in style.

The Netherlands, who came third in the group, had led 12-6 early on but were punished in the paint as France used their size and strength to immense effect as they ultimately won the rebounding battle 49-32.

A 7-0 run sent them ahead for good late in the first quarter and they pushed themselves 31-25 in front by half-time.

The Dutch still trailed by six late in the third but France out-scored their rivals 18-4 in the last eight minutes to accelerate out of sight.

On Monday, France meets Italy in their opening tie of the second phase while the Netherlands take on Spain.
