Belgium landed a huge overtime victory in Group F of the U16 European Championship Women, in Kozani, edging neighbours the Netherlands 65-64.
A day earlier Belgium had lost in similar fashion a heartbreaker against Spain, in a game where they wasted a huge lead. Against the Dutch Belgium celebrated a spectacular win after going back and forth with the Netherlands for 45 minutes.
In a very good first half the Netherlands established an early lead, making the right decisions on offense and selecting their shots well.
Kourtney Treffers caused a lot of trouble for the Belgian defense. With 14 points (5/10 shooting from the field) she played a splendid first two quarters. Treffers ended the game with 26 points and 11 rebounds.
Belgium was tied with the Netherlands in rebounding but had a significantly worse shooting percentage from the field (only 26.5 compared to 44.4 percent of the Dutch). Hind Ben Abdelkader kept the Belgians in the game with her 14 first half points.
In an up and down third period Belgium improved from the field. After trailing by seven points at the half, they cut the deficit down to 45-43 after thirty minutes.
The game really turned into a thriller in the fourth quarter. The lead changed sides with almost every possession. In the last minute (score 57-57) Belgium had the chance to score the go-ahead basket but committed a shot clock violation. With four seconds left the Netherlands had the opportunity for a game winner but couldn't get a shot.
In overtime Belgium gained a slight advantage and they went up by four points in the last minute which proved to be pivotal. The Dutch gave their all but a last gasp three pointer (64-65) came too late.
