GROUP CThe Netherlands had hoped they could continue their good run at this year's U16 European Championship Women in Greece and after beating Poland 67-63 they granted themselves that wish. With two victories on their side the Dutch advance into the Qualifying Round.
The two teams truly battled for a spot in the next round. Both sides started the game with high intensity. Poland were able to gain a slight advantage over the Dutch in the opening minutes. After ten minutes of play the Polish led 13-9.
Midway in the second period Poland had less trouble to score as they bolstered their lead to 23-17. The Netherlands worked hard not to fall back by too big a margin and eventually changed the momentum of the game. Led by their most prolific scorer Kourtney Treffers (17 points in the first half) they went on a 9-0 run late in the second period to gain the lead.
Poland tied it again after Beata Jaworska netted her 10th point with a successful jumpshot (35-35). After a couple of lead changes it were the Netherlands who went up by four points after three quarters.
In a thrilling finish both teams went back and forth. Poland came close to 61-62 with just 1:49 minutes remaining. The Dutch answered with crucial four points in a row making it 61-66. In a hectic final minute both teams missed good opportunities to score. Finally Treffers sank a free throw to make it a two possession game (63-67). With a mere three seconds left the time was too short for Poland to change the outcome of the game.
The Netherlands took their second victory and booked their ticket to the next round. Treffers tabbed a double double (her second of the tournament) with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Beata Jaworska led Poland in scoring with 19 points. She was the only Polish player in double figures.
