Late Surge Helps Dutch Past Greece

The Netherlands had every reason to celebrate after their opening game in the Qualifying Round at the U16 European Championship Women. In Ptolemaida they edged hosts Greece 60-50 and improved to a 2-1 record.

After the Dutch team surprisingly reached the Qualifying Round they picked it up right where they left it at the Preliminary Round. The win over Greece improved their chances of progressing to the Quarter-Final Round.

For Greece the loss was a setback. Supported by the home crowd their chances looked good but late in the game the Greeks struggled offensively. The Dutch outscored them 23-11 in the final ten minutes.

The decisive push for the Netherlands came late in the fourth quarter. After trailing by one point they went on a 9-2 run with about four minutes to go. This set the course for the outcome of the game.

The Greeks battled but could not close the gap anymore. The Netherlands finally ran away with the victory.
