Germany have announced that their first Qualifying Round game for EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia will be held in Hagen on 18 August against Luxembourg.

One up-and-coming player who has strong ties to the city is very hopeful of being in the national side for the occasion.

Per Gunther, who played for BBV Hagen and Phoenix Hagen before leaving for Ulm three seasons ago, would love the opportunity to run onto the court for new coach Svetislav Pesic this summer and especially for the opener.

"I think it's great that an international game is already taking place in Hagen and I hope that I can be there," Gunther said.

"To make an appearance in the national jersey in Hagen is always special for me."

A 1.84m point guard, the 24-year-old Gunther plays big minutes for Ulm, the surprise package in this season's BEKO BBL, and averages 8.5 points, 2.6 assists per game.

He played for Germany at the 2008 U20 European Championship Division B and nearly made last summer's EuroBasket squad but was, with Konrad Wysocki, let go on the last day of cuts.

Pesic, meanwhile, looked ahead to the encounter with Luxembourg.

"We will be very well prepared," he said.

"The Hagen crowd can look forward to a highly motivated German team."

Germany will play in Group B with Luxembourg, Sweden, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.

The top two sides and the four best third-place teams from the six groups will qualify for EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia.
