BASKETBALL IN EUROPE

23. Rickey Paulding (EWE Baskets)

The two German teams that compete in the EuroChallenge, EWE Baskets Oldenburg and Telekom Baskets Bonn, registered important victories and climbed up the BEKO Bundesliga table at the weekend.

On Saturday night, Oldenburg had a strong second quarter and built a comfy nine-point cushion by half-time to then cruise to an 84-68 win over Artland Dragons at home.

Small forward Rickey Paulding was largely responsible for simplifying proceedings for the hosts, as he went 4-for-7 from behind the three-point arc and finished with 22 points to lead all scorers.

Shooting guard Christopher Kramer chipped in with 14 points while Julius Jenkins and Dru Joyce contributed 12 points apiece.

Oldenburg improved to 16-7 and, following ALBA Berlin's defeat on Sunday, they are now in third place in the standings and could even go second at the expense of Bayern Munich, who are at 17-8, as they have two games in hand over the Munich team.

Bonn meanwhile are now up to sixth spot on the table, as they bounced back from last week's loss to ALBA, that had snapped their five-game winning streak, with a 94-56 success over LTi Giessen 46ers on Sunday.

Benas Veikalas led all scorers with 16 points while Chris Ensminger picked up a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double for Bonn.

Also on Sunday, Khimik Yuzhne enjoyed a 92-63 rout of Kryvbasbasket at home, in Ukrainian Superleague action.

The EuroChallenge quarter-finalists took control of the encounter right from the start and then pulled away decisively in the third quarter, never allowing their guests to contemplate a comeback.

Forward Sava Lesic made 8 of his 13 shots from the floor and led all scorers with 18 points, also adding 10 rebounds to collect a double-double, while Devoe Joseph added 16 points and four assists for Khimik.

Khimik are now in fourth place in the Superleague, with a 19-13 record.

20. Dwight Buycks (BCM Gravelines)

BCM, PARIS, KRASNYE KRYLIA LOSE ON THE ROAD

The outcome of the weekend domestic games of the two French teams that have reached the quarter-final play-offs of the EuroChallenge was the same, but unlike the German duo in the competition, they both slumped to defeat.

BCM Gravelines Dunkerque gave up a six-point lead at Elan Chalon and allowed their hosts to take the encounter into overtime, eventually falling 69-67.

Dwight Buycks led all BCM scorers with 15 points but was not on his best shooting night as he was 5-for-13 from the floor, while Kennedy Winston finished with 12 points in defeat.

If Strasbourg win their clash with Roanne on Monday night, BCM will find themselves off the top of the Pro A standings for the first time since autumn.

Paris Levallois also slumped to defeat at the weekend, albeit in less dramatic fashion, 72-59 at Le Mans.

The Parisians did not manage to recover from an unproductive third quarter, in which they were outscored 18-10.

Antoine Diot finished with 13 points and Andrew Albicy with 12 in losing efforts.

Unlike BCM, Krasnye Krylia know already that they have been knocked off the summit of the table in VTB League Group A, following their 74-66 loss at direct competitors UNICS Kazan on Sunday.

The Samara outfit went into the half-time interval leading by two points, but their hosts turned it up a notch on defence in the second half and Krasnye Krylia did not manage to keep up.

Chester Simmons was the only Samara player to score in double digits and he actually led all scorers with 20 points in defeat, while forward Andre Smith was one point shy of a double-double, as he finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
