Red Wings Clipped At Triumph

Triumph Lyubertsy rolled to a 94-71 victory in the first leg of their EuroChallenge Qualifying Round tie on Tuesday night against fellow Russians Krasnye Krylia.

Behind 26-22 with 40 seconds to play in the opening quarter, Triumph took over.

They got four straight free-throws by Dmitry Kulagin to knot the game and a pair of Victor Zvarykin three-point plays at the start of the second quarter completed the 10-0 spurt.

The bleeding for the Red Wings didn't stop.

After Evgeny Kolesnikov split a pair of free-throws for the visitors, Kulagin buried a three-ball to start a 14-0 run that left the hosts on top, 46-27.

The visitors managed to reduce the arrears to 52-39 by half-time.

Triumph's lead never slipped into a single digits in the second half.

They then ended up blowing out a side coached by Sergey Bazarevich that Triumph boss Valdemaras Chomicius had been so complimentary of beforehand.

The point guard for Triumph, Tywain McKee, had 14 points, eight assists and 10 rebounds.

Jerry Jefferson also had a big night with 15 points, 10 boards and four helpers.

Zvarykin led the winners with 16 points.

Kyle Landry contributed 14 and Kulagin weighed in with 14.

The second leg will be played next week in Samara.
