| To say Yarone Arbel likes basketball would be an understatement of epic proportions. He eats, sleeps and breathes it and gives his EuroChallenge impressions every week in By The Numbers. |
One more game to go in the Last 16 phase of the EuroChallenge, and the stage is set for the last fight for a Quarter-Final berth.
While one group is already decided, three will fight till the very last second, and some teams will also rush to check on fibaeurope.com what happened in the parallel game to know their fate.
Here are all the options coming the more decisive week of the season. Group I This group is the easiest to figure out as the qualifying teams are set. BG Gottingen will finish in the top spot as the worst they can have is a 4-2 record, and in that case they would win a tie-breaker thanks to goal difference with the only other team that can match that - Krasnye Krylia.
The Russian side secured the second spot in the group. They can't win the first spot as explained, while easily win the tie breaker thanks to the same goal difference in case EiffelTowers Den Bosch match their record in the group. Team | Current Record | Win/Lose | Then | If... | BG Gottingen | 4-1 | Either | Finish first | - | Krasnye Krylia | 3-2 | Either | Finish second | - | EiffelTowers Den Bosch | 2-3 | Either | Out of the race | - | Proteas EKA AEL | 1-4 | Either | Out of the race | - |
Group J
Going into the last week there are three teams with the same 3-2 record - KK Zagreb, BC FMP Belgrade and Artland Dragons.
The last team in the group, Belgacom Liege are out of the race.
The last week will feature a head-to-head match in Croatia between Zagreb and Artland.
The hosts finish first in case of a win, but can still qualify if they lose as long as FMP lose as well.
Artland see the exact same scenarios since both teams have a tie breaker advantage over FMP. The team from Belgrade know they have a ticket to the next round if they beat at home the visitors from Liege who already lost interest in the games, but in case of a loss their way out is paved. Team | Current Record | Win/Lose | Then | If... | KK Zagreb | 3-2 | Win | Finish first | - | KK Zagreb | 3-2 | Loss | Finish second | FMP lose | KK Zagreb | 3-2 | Loss | Out of the race | FMP win | BC FMP Belgrade | 3-2 | Win | Finish second | - | BC FMP Belgrade | 3-2 | Loss | Out of the race | - | Artland Dragons | 3-2 | Win | Finish first | - | Artland Dragons | 3-2 | Loss | Finish second | FMP lose | Artland Dragons | 3-2 | Loss | Out of the race | FMP win |
Group K
The story in this group is upside-down from the previous one.
Scavolini Pesaro already earned the top spot and even a hard loss won't knock them down from there, yet three teams fight for the second spot in the group, all tied with a 2-3 record at the moment.
For Apoel things are very clear. With a win over KK Buducnost they finish second, and a loss will finish their season a bit earlier than hoped.
Buducnost need a win, but also an Elan Chalon loss to Scavolini in order to qualify from the second spot, and any other scenario will keep them out.
Chalon, obviously, need the opposite scenario. They will continue to compete only with a win attached to a Buducnost win in Cyprus. Team | Current Record | Win/Lose | Then | If... | Scavolini Pesaro | 4-1 | Either | Finish first | - | Apoel | 2-3 | Win | Finish second | - | Apoel | 2-3 | Loss | Out of the race | - | Elan Chalon | 2-3 | Win | Second place | Buducnost win | Elan Chalon | 2-3 | Win | Out of the race | Buducnost lose | Elan Chalon | 2-3 | Loss | Out of the race | - | KK Buducnost | 2-3 | Win | Finish second | Chalon lose | KK Buducnost | 2-3 | Win | Out of the race | Chalon win | KK Buducnost | 2-3 | Loss | Out of the race | - |
Group L
The last group on the list is simpler than it seems, having two teams with a 3-2 record and another two with the opposite one.
Banvit BC will remain outside the race no matter what happens, and leave the way for three teams to fight for three spots.
Chorale Roanne Basket qualified already, but still need to fight for the top spot. They will get it in case of a home win against Antwerp Giants. A loss will kick them down to the second spot. The team from Belgium will finish first with a win, but a home loss will send them to check on fibaeurope.com praying for a Banvit win, which will bestow them the seconnd spot.
In case Enisey Krasnoyarsk wins, they will drop to the third spot and say goodbye. Enisey must win to stay in the race, but still depend on the other game, and will be able to enjoy that win only if with an Antwerp loss. If any other case, they finish outside the golden list. Team | Current Record | Win/Lose | Then | If... | Chorale Roanne Basket | 3-2 | Win | Finish first | - | Chorale Roanne Basket | 3-2 | Loss | Finish second | - | Antwerp Giants | 3-2 | Win | Finish first | - | Antwerp Giants | 3-2 | Loss | Finish second | Banvit win | Antwerp Giants | 3-2 | Loss | Out of the race | Enisey win | Enisey Krasnoyarsk | 2-3 | Win | Finish second | Antwerp lose | Enisey Krasnoyarsk | 2-3 | Win | Out of the race | Antwerp win | Enisey Krasnoyarsk | 2-3 | Loss | Out of the race | - | Banvit BC | 2-3 | Either | Out of the race | - |
