Samara Finally Taste Success

It took a while, but CSK VVS-Samara finally won a game in the Russian Superleague, beating Spartak-Primorye Vladivostok 76-72.

Saturday’s triumph allowed Samara boss Valeri Tikhonenko, the former Russia national team star who earlier in his career coached CSKA Moscow, to breathe a sigh of relief.

"We have had rather difficult fixtures at the start of this season,” he said.

“We lost our first three games by big margins and those defeats influenced our players.”

Dynamo Moscow Region won their opener against Samara, 95-64, and that mauling was followed by heavy losses to UNICS Kazan (101-68) and CSKA Moscow (97-62).

“It wasn't easy to set the team properly for the game, so that's why I'm happy that we've won the game,” Tikhonenko said. “This win is very important for us mostly, psychologically.”

Tikhonenko says if his team is to be successful this season, they must cut down on their one-on-one play and begin to attack opponents as a team.

“As for the performance (against Spartak-Primorye), we had too many individual actions,” he admitted.

“We must improve the team's play. But, there is still time and I definitely hope we will make progress.”
