After former captain Todor Stoykov retired two years ago, Filip Videnov has emerged as the reference player and a real leader for the Bulgarian National Team due to his scoring power which was the feature of the Qualifying Round last summer. In fact he scored more than twice the points of any other player on the roster and that is how reliant his team have become on him. The versatile guard who can also occupy the small forward spot if required has always been prolific and showed two years ago in Poland he knows how to find ways of scoring at the elite level. This is due to his ability to not only shoot from downtown but to also drive to the hoop and either make plays or get himself on the foul line. There are not many players from Bulgaria who manage to play at the same club level as Videnov which last season included a first full season in Euroleague. Now 31-years-old, it's easy to forget he also brings a veteran ‘know how' to the team and is someone for the younger players to look up to. He is difficult to guard for opposing defenders due to his willingness to roam all over the court in pursuit of a score, but the real beauty of Videnov is that when defences are drawn to him, he has the vision to find an open team-mate. He is happy dishing up assists as well as taking responsibility himself and can assume the role of playmaker. He is by no means only a shooter and works hard on defence as well as being an excellent rebounder. Earlier this year he won the Polish Championship with a typically influential contribution.
