Italy lived dangerously in the final moments of the game with Slovenia in the Global Vision U18 European Championship Classification Round for 9th to 12th place, but prevailed in the end, 62-57.
The Italians had a 19-point advantage with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter, 55-36, but the die-hard Slovenians pushed them to the edge.
Tjasa Unverdorben, with a two-point jump shot, and Janza Dolinsek, who made two free throws, her first points of the game, cut the gap to 15 points before the last quarter.
The Slovenians continued the surge. Dolinsek was absolutely fabulous and added another nine points in the fourth quarter, while Abramovic capped the huge comeback with a three-pointer at the two minute mark to make it 57-57.
But it was all the gas the Slovenian team had in the tank.
They never scored again, while Caterina Dotto put away the game for good with four consecutive points.
She and her twin sister Francesca finished with a combined 16 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.
Alessandra Formica contributed with 10 points and six rebounds.
Rebeca Abramovic had 17 points and seven rebounds, while Ziva Macura posted a double-double, 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Dolinsek added 11 points, all of them in the last 11 minutes of the game.
