Italy Prove Resilient


Italy bounced back from a thrashing at the hands of Serbia in their Group F qualifying round opener at the UMCOR U18 European Championship by beating Sweden 66-55 on Wednesday.

The Swedes led 49-45 seven minutes into the second half but the Azzurre then went on a 12-0 run to take command, with Giulia Gatti scoring eight of her 12 points in that surge.

Sweden stayed within striking distance and reduced the deficit to five 60-55 going into the last minute but they missed their next four shots.

Elisa Templari led the Italians in scoring with 13 points while Martina Stalvant had a game-high 18 points in defeat.

Stephanie Yderstrom had all of her 14 points in the opening half for the Swedes who went into the break with a 39-34 lead.
