Azzuri In Fine Form In Istanbul

Italy are looking a confident side ahead of the European Championships that begin in 10 days time, much to the delight of coach Carlo Recalcati.

Italy passed their last test in style with three consecutive wins to clinch the Effes Pilsen World Cup II.

Unlike the Strasbourg Tournament that Italy won unconvincingly last week, Recalcati's men dominated in Turkey, with a deserved 76-64 win in Sunday's final against the host nation.

"We return to Italy with the acknowledgement that we have reached a team dimension that gives us the certainty to be competitive in the next European championships," said Recalcati.

Italian guard Gianluca Basile, who was excellent throughout the tournament, was once again crucial in his side's win with 17 points and six assists against Turkey, becoming Italy's highest scorer in the game.

The Skipper had the day before guided Italy to the final following his 27 points and five assists against Russia in the Azzurri's 80-71 win.

Italy had lost to Serbia & Montenegro in Istanbul last Wednesday but it did not appear to hinder Recalcati's men who dispatched New Zealand 69-53 last Friday.

In Sunday’s final against Turkey, the Azzurri defence and attack worked in perfect harmony.

Italy kept up with Turkey's breaks at the start of the game to keep the match level by the end of the first-half at 35-35.

Turkey’s young centre Kaya Peker succesfully replaced the injured Mehmet Okur and became the highest scorer on the night with 23 points while guard Ender Arslan also impressed for Aydin Ors' side.

Italian centre Giacomo Galanda's eight points at the start of the third quarter gave the Azzurri an eight-point lead that was to prove crucial.

Despite Turkey's attempt to tighten their defensive line, Italian guards Davide Lamma and
Marco Carraretto's three pointers in the fourth quarter allowed the Azzurri to keep in control of a battle they had already won.
