Time is running out on Carlton Myers' proposed move to giants Montepaschi Siena.
With one day left before the Lega A transfer window closes, Siena executives will have to make a convincing bid if they wish to sign the 32-year-old.
"The transfer window closes on February 28th, if no agreement is reached, Myers will finish the season playing with Roma," said Roma spokesman Fabrizio Galassi.
That the former Italy captain wants to leave Lottomatica Roma does not come as a surprise in the Italian capital.
In a mediocre season for the Roman team, only Myers has provided some consolation for the fans.
Roma have failed to make an impact in their long-awaited return to European competition.
The shooting guard, who is the third highest points-scorer this season in Italy's top flight, has been crucial in helping his team maintain seventh place in the standings.
With only the top eight teams going through to the play-offs, Piero Bucchi's team still remain in contention.
It was the English-born player whose crucial three-pointer in Sunday's game allowed Roma to make a swift comeback and clinch two crucial points against Teramo Basket.
Under the watchful eyes of Siena executives, Myers gave another remarkable performance on Thursday's Coppa Italia semi-final in Forli.
Despite Roma's 85-77 defeat against Scavolini Pesaro, Myers was the game's highest point scorer with an impressive 28 points.
A return to European competition and the possibility to fight for the Italian title with Siena is a big temptation for Myers.
And to be in the charge of his former boss at Fortitudo Bologna and Italy's national coach Carlo Recalcati would be an added motivation.
Myers, who has a contract with Roma until June 2005, has already admitted his desire to return to the national team after the Olympic Games.
A transfer to Siena could just be another step towards a return to the Italy set-up.
However, it is unlikely that the Romans will easily let go of their idol.
Roma president Claudio Toti is confident Myers will remain in the Eternal City until the end of the season.
"Carlton will remain with us, there is no way we will let him leave this season," he said.
