Evanthia Maltsi poured in 26 points as Greece qualified for the World Championship for the first time in history by coming back from an 11-point deficit to beat Italy 60-56 and take fifth place at the 2009 EuroBasket Women.

Pelagia Papamichail had 15 points and eight rebounds and Dimitra Kalentzou added 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists for the Greeks, who qualified for the 2010 Worlds in the Czech Republic as well as the 2011 EuroBasket Women in Poland.

Greece, Italy Battle For Spot In Worlds
Proud basketball nations Italy and Greece square off in the 2009 EuroBasket Women fifth place game with the winner booking their spot at next summer's FIBA World Championship.


The victor also clinches a berth at the 2011 EuroBasket in Poland - a big step for both teams as well.
While both Greece and Italy came in with this double qualification for 2010 and 2011 as the main goal, neither really expected to be playing in Saturday's second game.

Italy Overcome 22-Point Deficit, Top Latvia

Italy fought back from a 22-point deficit late in the first half to knock off 2009 EuroBasket Women hosts Latvia 68-66 in overtime and book their spot in the fifth place game.

Laura Macchi and Rafaella Masciadri combined for 38 points to lead the way for Giampiero Ticchi's team, which will face off against Greece for fifth place for a spot in the 2010 FIBA World Championship Women and the 2011 EuroBasket Women.
