France edged a tense finish to top Italy 60-58 in the opening game of their U20 European Championship Women Group C campaign.

Italy had led 53-52 with a little under five minutes to go before France established the slim lead that would hold up the rest of the way.

Ondaye-Akoa Elenga made a lay-up for France and, after Federica Tognalini had missed for Italy, Touty Gandega's jump-shot gave the French a 56-53 edge.

Both teams then missed a series of shots before Federica Nannucci brought Italy back to within one, 56-55, with 68 seconds to go.

Hhadyia Minte missed a pair of shots from the free-throw line for France, but Isabelle Strunc bailed her out, grabbing the rebound and making a jump-shot to make it 58-55.

Elenga and Kelly Corre then both split pairs of free throws to grow the gap to five in the dying seconds.

Elena Bestagno nailed a three-pointer for Italy but it was too late as France hung on.

Gandega and Corre led France with 14 points each while Alessandra Tava had 19 for Italy with Nannucci adding 10.
