Italy bounced back from Tuesday's defeat to France by beating Bulgaria 82-65 at the U20 European Championship for Women.
Giorgia Sottana led her team in scoring with 19 points. She connected on seven of 10 attempts from two point range.
"This is a very important win for us," said Sottana.
"We managed to forget about yesterday's defeat, which wasn't easy.
"But we kept our focus for the entire game."
It was an all-round team effort from the Italians, who had two other players finish in double figures.
Tournament hosts Bulgaria stormed to a 21-9 lead late in the first quarter but were outscored 30-17 over the next 12 minutes.
Chiara Consolini's layup gave the Azzurre a 39-38 half-time lead.
Italy came out fresh and ready to run and hit Bulgaria with a 16-2 run late in the third quarter to take a 65-48 lead.
It proved a hammer blow for the Bulgarians who ultimately ran out of steam.
Bulgaria had a terrible shooting afternoon. They were 21 of 72 (29.1%) from the floor while their opponents were 28 of 66 (42.4%). |
