France Prevail In Tense Finish



Clement Faroux scored 10 points and rebounded his own missed free throw with 8.1 seconds left to secure France's 72-70 victory over Italy in the Qualifying Round Group F of the U18 European Championship Men.

Mouhammadou Jaiteh had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Kevin Dinal collected eight points and 10 rebounds for France, who improved to 2-1 in the group.

Italy dropped to 1-2 in the group despite 26 points from Amedeo Della Valle and 22 points from Amedeo Tessitori.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair with neither team leading by more than five points with five lead changes and four tied games and France leading 23-18 after one period.

France pushed the lead to nine points at 27-18 before watching Italy pull to within 33-32. But the French were ahead 42-35 at halftime.

In the third quarter, France led by as many as eight points and were up 56-50 when Italy went on a 7-0 run for a 57-56 lead, which was then gone at the end of the period with Italy leading 58-57.

Italy pushed back ahead 63-61 before Faroux made two layups in building a 70-65 advantage. Italy pulled within 72-70 with two foul shots by Tessitori with 27 seconds remaining, setting up Faroux's big rebound.
