Gal Mekel is the ultimate old-school playmaker and Israel's starting point guard. Mekel is a two-time Israeli champion winning both rings against heavy-favourites Maccabi Tel-Aviv. He was also crowned Finals MVP before making the jump to the NBA to join the Dallas Mavericks in 2013. Mekel registered a total of 34 showings for the Mavs before being released. He also had a brief stint with the New Orleans Pelicans. Statistically, Mekel was one of the top three NBA point guards during the 2013 pre-season. However, Mekel returned to Europe signing with Russian club Nizhny Novgorod making his presence felt in the Euroleague where he ranked second in scoring with 26 points, and second in assists with nine dimes per 40-minutes. Mekel posted a total of 11.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 4.7 points over six Euroleague games for Novgorod. Mekel, a fearless competitor with leadership skills, ultra-impressive court-vision and ability to defend all guard positions, was dominant for Israel during the Second Qualification Round, tallying 13.3 points, 4.5 boards and ranked second overall in assists with 6.5 per game.
