Eldebrink Twins Shine For Sweden, Poland Win


Sweden, Hungary, the Slovak Republic and hosts Poland all enjoyed blowout wins on the opening day of the U20 European Championship for Women Division B in Poznan.

In Group B, the Eldebrink twins led the Swedes in a 70-52 romp over Portugal.

Frida Eldebrink scored a game-high 25 points while her sister Elin, the point guard, had nine rebounds and seven assists to go with her five points.

Lars Johansson's team took command early in the second quarter. Leading 15-14, the Scandinavians outscored the Portuguese 19-4 over the last 9:11 of the period and went to the changing rooms with a 34-18 stranglehold on proceedings.

Portugal managed to claw the deficit back to 11 in the third quarter but got no closer.

Frida Aili also had 14 points for Sweden, while Nádia Tavares poured in 23 and grabbed seven boards in defeat.

Poland, favourites to win promotion to Division A, rolled to an 86-59 triumph over Israel. Aneta Kotnis had 17 points and eight rebounds for the winners, who trailed 19-18 after the first quarter but turned the game on its head by outscoring the visitors 25-12 over the next 10 minutes for a 43-31 lead at half-time.

They pressed home the advantage and were in front 63-46 heading into the last frame before storming to victory.

Lin Golan finished with a game-high 20 points for the Israelis.

Hungary had no problems with Ireland as they claimed an 80-44 victory, Zsofia Varga top-scoring for the winners with 19 points.

Finda Mansaré scored 10 points and also corralled 10 rebounds for the Hungarians.

Shauna O'Connor paced the Irish with 10 points.

The Slovakians were 62-43 winners over Romania with the two Katarinas wreaking havoc.

Katarina Slimakova had 14 points to lead the scorers, while Katarina Tetemondová had 16 rebounds to go with her 11 points, four steals and two blocked shots.
