Ireland Open Four Nations Tournament With England Win

03 September 2004

Ireland's senior men got just the start they were looking for at this week's Four Nations Tournament in Cork.

Ireland featured 3 new caps in the side, Billy Collins, Chris Bracey and Justen Naughton, and the newcomers fitted in nicely as Ireland recorded a 79:70 victory over England.

After taking an opening quarter 25:18 lead, the home side didn't trail for the remaining 30 minutes. Marty Conlon led the Irish with 16 points while the Larranga brothers (John and Jay) combined for 27.

Ireland 79(44) M Conlon 16, Jay Larranaga 14, John Larranaga 13
England 70(30) J Amaechi 17, P Perre 14, J Joseph 14

The other 2 competitiors, Turkey and Denmark, faced off in the second game of the first day. Turkey are in Ireland with a young side, but still had too much firepower for the Danes, winning 61:52.

The game was a low scoring affair and Turkey had arrived late at the venue due to travel problems. At halftime Turkey led 27:26, but it was only in the 4th that Turkey could move decisively ahead.

A 7-0 run in the closing minutes opened up a 59:52 lead for the Turks and they held on for victory.

Denmark 52(26) P Johansen
