Georgia’s attempts to win promotion to EuroBasket Division A received a significant blow on Wednesday when Iceland beat them right before the death with a three-pointer in a 76-75 upset.
Trying to keep pace with Group C leaders Finland, who are unbeaten at 6-0, Georgia led 74-72 but allowed Jakob Sigurdarson to nail a three-pointer with just two seconds remaining.
Finland thrashed Iceland 85-66 on Saturday for their sixth consecutive victory in EuroBasket Division B.
Shawn Huff led the way with 16 points while Tuukka Kotti had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Austria blew a close contest wide open in the fourth quarter and beat Iceland 85-64 in Klosterneuburg.
Magnus Gunnarson’s three-pointer with 2:35 to go in the third quarter gave Iceland their last lead at 49-47.
Iceland coach Sigurour Ingimundarson has admitted his team need to treat every game like a final from now on in if they are to win promotion to EuroBasket Division A.
His side have now lost their opening two games in Group C following Saturday's 80-65 defeat in Georgia.
