Ratgeber Announces Preliminary Squad For Latvia

14 April 2009

Laszlo Ratgeber is still hard at work leading Spartak Moscow Region in the Russia's play-offs but that hasn't stopped the Hungary coach from naming his preliminary squad for June's EuroBasket Women in Latvia.

Ratgeber guided Spartak to their third straight EuroLeague Women title on April 5 in Salamanca and was able to watch many of his national team players who are on the books of MKB Euroleasing Sopron in action in Spain.

Sopron finished fourth in the EuroLeague Women and five of their players have been included in the group for Latvia.

Ratgeber, as expected, has not included veteran guard Dalma Ivanyi, the star of his former club MiZo Pecs.

Ivanyi, who turned 33 last month, didn't play last summer when Hungary qualified and had already indicated that her days with Hungary were over with the national side ready to move forward with a new generation of players.

"It's time to give way for the young players," Ivanyi said, when asked about not being in the squad.

"It is important to lay the foundation for the future. In addition, if we look at this team, it doesn't really have players who are over 30.

"The younger girls fought to be in the European Championship so they don't deserve their place to be taken away from me."

Hungary finished 5-3 in qualifying Group C and advanced as the best third-place team in all of the pools.

Hunary's preliminary squad for EuroBasket Women: Bernadett Nemeth (Szeged), Barbara Semsei (Sopron), Orsolya Englert (Reims), Diana Furesz (Gyor), Zsofia Fegyverneky (Brno), Katalin Honti (Sopron), Nora Bujdoso (Bourges), Andrea Somogyi (Pecs), Anna Vida (Gyor), Krisztina Raksanyi (Pecs), Zsuzsanna Horvath (Sopron), Anna Vajda (Pecs), Tijana Krivacsevics (Sopron), Dora Horti (Sopron), Petra Ujhelyi (Rivas Ecopolis), Andrea Csaszar (Estudiantes), Zsofia Horvath (Zalaegerszeg).
