Slovakia, Belgium Storm Into Quarters


Slovakia and Belgium were the only teams that remained unbeaten as Preliminary Round action concluded Saturday in Ohrid. 

Belgium downed Greece 74-60 to finish a perfect 5-0 in Group A of the U20 European Championship Women 2009 Division B in Ohrid.

Kim Mestdagh led the way for Belgium with 22 points and eight rebounds. 

Belgium took an eleven-point lead into the second quarter on two Mestdagh free-throws with under a minute to play in the first period. 

Her team would extend their lead to 29 (63-34) and hold off a late Greek last-gasp effort to claim the victory. 

Greece (2-3) was paced by Maria Bousuaki's 21 points and eight boards.

In other Group A action, Great Britain (2-3) handled Austria (0-5) by the score of 64-46 behind Tamzin Barroilhet's 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Hungary (4-1) beat Portugal (2-3) 69-46 on 16 points a piece from Bettina Bozoki and Tijana Krivacevic.

In Group B, Romania went to 3-1 thanks to Elisabeth Pavel's 30 points and ten rebounds in her team's 80-69 victory over Israel (1-3) and the Slovak Republic (4-0) had no problem with F. Y. R. of Macedonia (0-4), beating them 91-55. 

In the Quarter-Finals, on Monday, July 13th, Slovakia will play Portugal while Belgium face Israel, Romania and Hungary meet Greece and the Netherlands respectively.
