One thing that has never been in short supply in Greece is dominant, gifted point guards. Calathes has not yet climbed to the heights of Theo Papaloukas or Dimitris Diamantidis but he is simply irreplaceable on this Greek national team, even though depth in the backcourt is not an issue. Calathes is the man charged with changing the tempo and pushing the team in the open court. Crucially, he can perform this task rapidly but patiently, as his excellent court vision enables him to involve his team-mates. Calathes did not enjoy an enormous amount of playing time during his two-year spell at the Grizzlies but he honed his already excellent defensive skills and mastered the art of the pick'n'roll alongside Marc Gasol. Calathes returns in the new season to the club where he launched his professional career, Panathinakos, as the linchpin of a new roster under coach Sasha Djordjevic.
