20 September 2006

Evanthia Maltsi rattled in 33 points as Greece extended their EuroBasket Women qualifying record to 4-1 with an 81-55 defeat of Bulgaria in Pravets.

Maltsi scorched the Bulgarian defense with 13/20 shooting including seven of nine from three-point range.

Bulgaria have yet to record a win in qualifying and competing with the Greeks was always going to be a tough ask.  That proved to be the case as early as the first quarter and Maltsi scored eight points as Greece jumped out to a 20-12 lead.

Bulgaria fought back to cut the advantage to with one minute to play in the second, but Maltsi drilled two shots, including a three, to give Greece a 39-32 halftime lead.

Greece made the game safe in the third period thanks to some hot shooting. They opened with a 13-0 run to establish a 54-32 advantage and went on to shoot 11/15 in the quarter, including at one point seven straight field goals.

The Greek offense left Bulgaria reeling and they trailed 66-45 at the 30-minute mark.

It was just a case of going through the motions in the final period as Greece easily preserved their advantage and the victory.

Greece shot 55% from the field for the game, including 10/18 from the three-point line. Dimitra Kalentzou added 15 points to Malti's game-high 33 while team captain Polymnia Sarekgou weighed in with 14.

The Greeks face Belarus on Saturday in a contest which may well decide top spot in Group A.
