7th-8th Place Game: Greece 89 Israel 82
In the preliminary round Israel managed to surprise Greece and forced them to fight until the very last second of the group B games to earn the top 8 spot. Today Greece got its revenge, although Israel wasn’t far from another surprise.
The Greeks missed the semi-finals by one point, while Russia's ambitions were hit in the head by Spain, but both teams arrived today with big plans to participate in the 5-6 game.
Yet another thriller, yet another overtime, second of the day and first of the quarter-finals.
Italy, coming from the 1st place in group A faced the 4th from group B – Greece. A classic battle between two very talented teams, decided after overtime in favour of the Italian side. The Italians came very close to losing and survived only thanks to two misses by Greece in the last possession of regulation and the last one of overtime.
The last team to catch a quarter-final berth was Greece. The team that camer to Zaragoza as one of the favorites in the pre-Championship predictions fell to last place in Group B the day before the last game, with only one win out of four games. Greece couldn't then depend on its own anymore. It had one main wish – to beat Lithuania, if possible by 7 points or more, and hope for a win of Israel and Turkey. If you missed the news, that’s exactly what took place here in the last day of the preliminary round. After Euro2004, a miracle is a routine for Greece.
