|Julia Xerri and Malta opened their campaign in style with a dominant win over Wales|
There were big wins for both the hosts and for Malta on the opening day of the U18 European Championship Women Division C in Andorra on Monday night.
With four teams participating at the event, Malta were the first to underline their gold medal potential in the First Round as they opened up with a 47-19 rout of Wales.
There had been few signs there would be such a convincing margin of success, after Wales managed to keep pace at 10-10 heading into the second period.
But, Wales would fail to double their score during the subsequent 30 minutes - although during the middle two quarters of the game, Malta weren't much better offensively.
Both teams misfired in a big way and heading into the last quarter, Malta led 25-17, before exploding with a stunning 22-2 finish to the game.
Wales couldn't cope with the defensive pressure, spilling the ball some 29 times and shooting a truly eye-watering 15.7% from the field, as Martina Scicluna led with an efficient 11 points for the winning team.
Andorra were similarly rampant against Gibraltar as they rode out comfortable 62-20 winners, benefitting from an excellent first quarter when they limited their opponents to a solitary point.
They continued the shut-out and led 31-7 at the interval, before Gibraltar finally found their offence and valiantly won the third period.
However, normal service was soon resumed as Andorra finished in spectacular fashion, re-asserting command with a 21-2 final period as they foraged an incredible 30 steals.
Marta Aguilera posted the best performance of the entire day with 14 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and five assists for the home side.
